When hiking by map, a compass you can see the map through works best. The MFH baseplate compass has a transparent baseplate with a magnifier, rulers with 1 : 25,000 and 1 : 50,000 scales and a liquid-damped needle. Wear it on a cord around your neck so it is always at hand.

You can see the map through the transparent baseplate, so you simply place the compass along your route and set the direction with the rotating bezel. The magnifier makes small details easier to read, and the scale rulers measure distances directly on the map.
