Compasses and Baseplate Compasses

If you are heading out into nature for adventure or simply for a hike, make sure you pack a compass or orienteering compass in your backpack. You never know when you might get lost. Modern technology accompanies us at every step nowadays, but relying on a mobile phone — which may malfunction, run out of battery or have no signal — is irresponsible. In our range you will find compasses and orienteering compasses from well-known brands MFH and Fox Outdoor, a guarantee of quality.

COMPASSES

A compass is a device for determining the cardinal directions. It works on the principle of magnetic force. It functions in any weather, and its only disadvantage is that you must not have any metallic device near it when using it. Compasses range from the simplest models to quality compasses with a built-in scale, magnifying glass or inclinometer. Your choice depends on how often you go into nature. A simple needle compass is sufficient for everyday hiking; for longer journeys or adventurous expeditions, it is worth spending a bit more on a robust, all-metal compass that will not break easily.

ORIENTEERING COMPASSES

An orienteering compass is an improved compass that makes terrain orientation and navigation easier. It additionally contains a protractor, magnifying glass and ruler. For precise measurement of azimuth — the directional angle — you need a map, which is why most orienteering compasses are made from a transparent material such as plastic or glass so the map remains visible. If you want to be sure of not getting lost while exploring nature, an orienteering compass is the safer bet. Its disadvantage compared with a plain compass is that you cannot simply slip it into a pocket, although you can hang it around your neck.

When choosing an orienteering compass or compass, opt for models made from durable materials. For compasses we recommend plastic over glass, which can crack and cause the compass to malfunction. If choosing plastic, hardened plastic is preferable. An orienteering compass should have a larger map scale, luminous markings of the cardinal directions for good visibility in dim light, and a practical cord so you can hang it around your neck.
